Privacy Policy

This policy explains, in plain English, what personal information we collect when you use the A Few Quiet Yarns community platform, why we collect it, who can see it, and the rights you have. We follow the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020 and its information privacy principles.

Who we are

The community is run by A Few Quiet Yarns Ltd ("AFQY", "we", "us"), a New Zealand company. We are the organisation responsible for your personal information. If you have any question about privacy, or want to see, correct or remove your information, just email us atryanthelion@afewquietyarns.co.nz. You'll get a reply from a real person.

What we collect

We only collect what we need to run a warm, safe community. That includes:

  • Your profile. Your first and last name, your role or title, the company you're with, your email address, your mobile phone number, a photo of you, and a link to your LinkedIn profile if you choose to share one.
  • Job search details. If you tell us you're looking for work, we record that, and you can choose to leave us a copy of your CV so we can help. Both are optional.
  • What you post. The posts, comments and reactions you share, messages you send in public chat, private one-to-one messages you send to other members, and any photo gallery albums you create.
  • Red Card reports. If you report someone's behaviour to us, we collect the details of that report.
  • Sign-in details. We use Supabase to handle logging in and keeping your account secure, so we hold the authentication data that goes with that.
  • Google sign-in. If you choose to sign in with Google, Google passes us basic details from your Google account (like your name and email) so we can set up and recognise your account. This is information we collect from Google rather than directly from you.

Why we collect it

We use your information to run the community and let you take part: to create your account, show you to other members, and let you post and message. We use it to keep the place safe and well-moderated, and to help members find and connect with one another. That's it. We don't sell your information, and we don't use it for advertising.

Who can see your information

  • Approved members can see your name, role, company, photo and LinkedIn link in the member directory. That's how people know who they're yarning with.
  • Your email address and mobile phone number are not shown to other members. They stay private to you and to us.
  • Whether you're looking for work, and any CV you leave with us, are never shown to other members. Only the AFQY team can see them, and your CV is stored in private storage with no public link.
  • Photos and other files you upload (except CVs) are stored at web addresses that anyone with the link can open. Please keep this in mind and only upload things you're comfortable sharing.
  • Red Card reports go only to AFQY. They aren't visible to other members.

Private messages and deleted content

This one matters, so we'll say it plainly. Private one-to-one messages and public chat messages are kept by AFQY as a moderation record even after you "delete" them. When you delete a message, it disappears from view for other members, but we keep a copy. This is a deliberate safety feature: it means that if someone behaves badly and then deletes what they said, we can still see what happened and act on it. We keep these records for safety and moderation, not to snoop, and we treat them with care.

Providers overseas

Running an online community means using some trusted service providers, and a few of them are based outside New Zealand. We choose providers who take good care of your information.

  • Hosting and storage: Supabase, running on Amazon Web Services in Sydney, Australia.
  • Email delivery: Resend, based in the United States, sends emails like sign-in and notification messages.
  • Google: for sign-in and for serving web fonts.

Keeping it safe and how long we keep it

We take reasonable steps to protect your information from loss, misuse and unauthorised access, including secure hosting and controlled access. We keep your information only for as long as we reasonably need it to run the community and meet our obligations. If you close your account we'll remove your profile, though we keep moderation records (including retained messages and Red Card reports) for as long as they're needed to keep members safe.

Your rights

You can ask to see the personal information we hold about you, and to correct anything that's wrong. You can also ask us to close your account. Just email us. When you do, we'll remove your profile, but as noted above some moderation records may be retained for safety. To exercise any of these rights, emailryanthelion@afewquietyarns.co.nz.

Cookies

We use a small browser storage token to keep you signed in as you move around the site. That's the only tracking we do. We don't use advertising cookies, and we don't track you around the web.

Complaints

If something about your privacy isn't right, please contact us first atryanthelion@afewquietyarns.co.nzand we'll do our best to sort it out. If you're not happy with how we've handled it, you can raise it with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner atprivacy.org.nz.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time as the community grows or the law changes. When we do, we'll update the date below. If the changes are significant, we'll let members know.
