Connection on Purpose Beats Connection by Accident

There’s a myth that connection is chemistry: some people click, some don’t, and there’s not much you can do about it. Sixteen years of running events for New Zealand’s tech community has taught us the opposite. Connection is a craft. The right conditions make good conversations dramatically more likely, and when someone designs those conditions on purpose, the results stop looking like luck.

The room feels different

You can tell within minutes when connection has been designed rather than left to chance. Nobody is standing alone at the edge. The quiet people are mid-conversation, not mid-exit. The newest person in the room is talking to one of the most established, and both of them are enjoying it. Strangers have somehow skipped the weather and landed in a real yarn.

None of that happened by accident. Every one of those moments was made more likely by deliberate choices about group size, about who was introduced to whom, about what people were invited to talk about, and about what was firmly kept out of the room. The guests just experience it as a great night.

What it produces

The thoughtful, quieter contributors, who are often the sharpest people in the building, become visible. And generosity becomes normal, because it keeps getting witnessed. Self-determination theory would say the deepest human motivators are being fed: competence, autonomy, relatedness. The people in the room would just say they finally work somewhere that feels human.

Why agendas poison it

There is one condition that can’t be compromised: the conversation has to be genuinely agenda-free. The moment connection becomes a means to an end, a pipeline, a stakeholder map, it curdles, and people feel it instantly. Our no-selling rule isn’t a quirk; it’s the foundation everything else stands on. People open up when they trust that nobody’s working an angle, and that trust is precisely what makes everything above possible.
